Discover the Region

The Lycian civilisation flourished along the coasts of present-day Antalya and Muğla from 2000 BC to AD 1200. The Lycian League, one of the first civilisations in the world to establish a democratic system of government, is considered the forerunner of modern federalism. The League's major cities — Xanthos, Patara, Tlos, Pinara, Myra and Olympos — held three votes each, while smaller cities held one.

The Lycians developed their own unique alphabet and language, and left their mark on art history with house-shaped tomb architecture carved into rock faces. Their passion for freedom was so strong that when Xanthos was besieged by the Persians, its people set fire to the city twice rather than surrender. This distinctive spirit is still felt in the world's first democratic assembly building at Patara and in inscriptions that have survived to this day.

The Xanthos-Letoon double site has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1988. Patara and Myra continue their candidacy on the UNESCO tentative list. The 540 km Lycian Way is the legendary hiking trail that connects the traces of this civilisation.
